I rarely do this, but I’m afraid I have to side with the Republicans on this issue. I have lived through one of these Union “elections” a few years ago when working for a local hospital. To say that this union used heavy handed techniques to “swing” the vote is a dramatic understatement.
The union made phony ballots, and threatened to burn down the hospital to one of the board members.
So the result was a situation that this article does NOT describe: The administration of the hospital wanted the union. The Union obviously agreed with the administration. But, the employees did not want the union. What finally saved us was an ER clerk who blew the whistle on the whole thing by reporting it to some state agency. He was later fired, but he saved the hospital from being robbed by criminals.
I’m sure that there are unions that are good. This union was very very bad, and it’s my only experience dealing with them. I agree strongly that workers should have rights, but there are other ways to do it. If the government did what it is supposed to do with OUR money, we wouldn’t need unions.
We cannot ignore the historical connection between unions and the mafia. Of course, newspapers don’t report about that. Paper is too flamable.
Bill Easing Organization Of Unions Passes House – washingtonpost.com:
In the most contentious clash between business and labor groups of the new Congress, the House yesterday passed legislation that would make it easier for workers to organize unions — a measure that President Bush has promised to veto and that Senate Republican leaders have vowed to filibuster.
Continuing in the populist tone of its first 100 hours, the House’s Democratic majority pushed through legislation to remove the right of employers to demand secret-ballot elections and to require employers to recognize unions once a majority of workers sign cards saying they want to organize.
